What is the vision of social protection from the Social Charter of the Americas?
In the recently approved Social Charter of the Americas (at the OAS General Assembly in 2012), the countries of the region acknowledged they have “a responsibility to develop and implement comprehensive social protection policies and programs, based on the principles of universality, solidarity, equality, nondiscrimination, and equity that give priority to persons living in conditions of poverty and vulnerability, taking into account their national circumstances.” (Chapter III, Article 14).
The Social Charter of the Americas is constituted as one of the most important and comprehensive documents on social development in the Hemisphere. The Charter will be accompanied by a Plan of Action to operationalize Charter principles and establish targets and strategic lines of action.
Some of the guiding questions of this webinar are:
1. What is the importance of the Social Charter of the Americas for the social development agenda in the region?
2. How are the principles of comprehensive social protection defined in the framework of the Social Charter?3. What are the main challenges to achieving comprehensive social protection systems?
4. What are the recommendations for the Draft Plan of Action?
