Third Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Social Development
BACKGROUND AND PRESENTATION
Ministers and High Authorities of Social Development of the Americas will gather in Asuncion, Paraguay, on July 13, 2016 on the occasion of the Third Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Social Development within the framework of Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) to reflect and discuss the theme, "Equity and Social Inclusion: Overcoming inequalities for more inclusive societies."
Previous meetings of Ministers and High Authorities on Social Development was held in Chile and Colombia in 2008 and 2010 respectively. As a result, documents containing commitments and mandates of Member States, mandates for the OAS Executive Secretariat for Integral Development (SEDI/OAS) and the OAS Secretariat were produced. The meetings addressed the goal of eradicating extreme poverty and reducing poverty, with a major emphasis on the strengthening of institutional capacity. Ministers established a clear line of action on the strengthening of national institutions responsible for social development in the region as well as improving and interconnecting the work of regional and subregional organizations to address the issue. Emphasis was given to social protection policies and specific programs implemented until 2010, and the need to increase social protection policies and the creation of the Inter-American Social Protection Network (IASPN) as a concrete result was highlighted.
