Workshop on Multidimensional Poverty Indexes: Good Practices and Lessons Learned from Latin America and Europe

The Inter-American Social Protection Network (IASPN) and the Organization of American States (OAS) have offered an ideal space and the tools for countries of the region to exchange experiences and knowledge of social protection. Within this framework, a workshop was held in Santa Marta, Colombia from the 31st of October till the 2nd of November, 2012, “The Third Workshop on Social Policy and International Cooperation” in collaboration with the Colombian Government. The objective was to create a space for dialogue and exchange of good practices and successful experiences on the topic of promotion and social protection between countries in the region.

 

Similarly, technical exchange and knowledge transfer initiatives have been facilitated that seek to strengthen public policies in Latin America and, for that matter, the improvement of the quality of life of the population.

 

Among many of the programs discussed at the “Third Workshop on Social Policy and International Cooperation” from the IASPN – OAS, one that generated the most interest from participating countries were the Multidimensional Poverty Indexes presented by Colombia and Uruguay. The countries participating in the Third Workshop expressed their interest in learning about the experiences of the two nations that have implemented Multidimensional Poverty Indexes (MPI) in greater detail, and in organizing a Regional Workshop to exchange experiences and training on MPI.

 

In this regard, considering the demand of participating countries, and that at a regional level the valuable experiences with the Multidimensional Measurement of Poverty in countries such as Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay, that have adopted methodological criteria for the multidimensional measurement of poverty; it is that the OAS and APC of Colombia will provide the opportunity to generate a space for said exchange.

 

Objectives of the Workshop:

 

1. Facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences of countries such as Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay in the multidimensional measurement of poverty along side other Latin American countries that are interested in said exchange.

 

2. Offer a training space on the topic of Multidimensional Poverty Indexes for the participants.
