Committed to achieving inclusive development, with equality and sustainability, which prioritize the full exercise of the rights of the citizens of the Americas, the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) signed a joint statement on 9 March 2017.
Its objective is to contribute to improving the tools available to countries to effectively combat poverty and inequality in the Americas. To this end, the agreement proposes the development of cooperation activities between the two institutions aimed at promoting the Multidimensional Poverty Index (IPM) as a technical tool available to countries to better understand the phenomenon of poverty by facilitating effective monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Agenda 2030 adopted by the states in the General Assembly of the United Nations in the year 2015. (Resolution A / 70 / L.1 "Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development").
Among the objectives set out in the declaration, it is important to work jointly on initiatives aimed at strengthening the capacities of the ministries responsible for social policy in OAS Member States to review, reform and adopt effective public policies to combat poverty and promote human development.
The signing of this declaration is part of SADYE / OAS efforts to support member states in fulfilling the commitments adopted at the Third Meeting of High Authorities and Ministers of Social Development in Asunción Paraguay, during which Ministers agreed to promote and strengthen national strategies for the eradication of poverty, particularly extreme poverty, with policies and programs that take into account their multidimensional nature and the need to combat it through inter-sectorial and inter-agency actions.
The first activity within the framework of this Declaration is the realization of the Regional Workshop on Measuring Multidimensional Poverty for public officials of the region during the week of March 13 to 17 in Bogotá, Colombia, in cooperation with the University of the Andes and the Department of Social Prosperity of Colombia.
