On March 9, 2017, the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) will sign a joint statement to improve the tools available to countries to effectively combat poverty and inequality in the Americas. Specifically, the agreement proposes the development of cooperation activities between the two institutions aimed at promoting the adoption of the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) as a technical tool to better understand the phenomenon of poverty and facilitate the effective monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development adopted by the states at the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2015. (Resolution A / 70 / L.1 "Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development").

This statement is aligned with the mandates adopted at the Third Meeting of High Authorities and Ministers of Social Development, during which Ministers agreed to promote and strengthen national strategies for the eradication of poverty, particularly extreme poverty, with policies and programs taking into account its multidimensional nature and the need to combat it with inter-sectorial and inter-agency actions.

The full document of the Declaration will be available beginning March 9.
