The current political momentum around social protection provides a unique opportunity to reinvigorate the development agenda.

What are the challenges to a comprehensive social protection in the Americas?
The way we approach hunger eradication depends on how we see food, which has multidimensional meanings for human societies. Three competing paradigms currently influence the global food system:
> food and nutrition security, which considers hunger a human need that must be satisfied;
> the right to food, a fully-fledged human right that states have the obligation to protect, respect and fulfill;
Do cash transfer programmes effectively address issues of social exclusion, including on the basis of gender, age, ethnicity and disability? How could beneficiary involvement enhance the effective implementation of cash transfer programmes? How can programmes be made more transparent and implementers more accountable? Can these programmes create sustainable pathways out of poverty and destitution?
